JULIA ALLWORTH
ICCSAA Professional Development Keynote/Workshop
The ICCSAA identified that its member colleges and staff members currently face a wicked problem: the challenge of students returning to campus after a global pandemic. Over the last several years, everything has changed. How can colleges return to pre-pandemic programming while honoring the needs of students who have faced dramatic life changes over the last several years? Staff and students are experiencing high rates of burnout and higher education is entering into a new era. What does success look like in this new landscape and how might the work be redesigned to meet changing needs?
Design thinking offers both a method and a mindset for innovation and approaching wicked problems. The Spring Professional Retreat offers space to introduce ICCSAA professionals to design thinking and how it might be a helpful tool for their work in these challenging times.
About Julia
Julia Allworth is a leader and innovator who specializes in design thinking, collaboration and related methodologies that strive to design with rather than for people. Julia is a co-author of a book entitled Design Thinking in Student Affairs: A Primer in collaboration with Lesley D’Souza and Gavin Henning. Julia also leads the Innovation Hub at the University of Toronto, where students are hired to learn design thinking and work on projects that support creating better campus experiences for their peers.
Julia is also a TEDx speaker who inspired audiences with her talk entitled Design Yourself to Change the World.
Outside of her work, Julia is a single mom to 8-year-old twins with many learning differences and a non-traditional learner herself. She is passionate about equity and social justice for marginalized groups, and an advocate for accessibility and inclusive, human-centered design in education.
